More Thievery in the Dark of the Night

More Thievery in the Dark of the Night...

Fellow Texans,

I write to you today because later tonight the Senate will bring to a vote a 2,071 page healthcare bill chock-full of taxes and provisions that will fundamentally change our nation.  The House and Senate are well on their way to achieving another government takeover of a major industry in our country.  Instead of focusing on tort reform and cleaning up Medicare and Medicaid, they are ramming a bill down the throats of the American people without regard to the unintended consequences we have already witnessed by government entitlement programs.

Among the many outrageous provisions in this bill is one specifically tailored for our neighboring Louisiana in order to influence, or some might say buy, a "Yea" vote from Senator Mary Landrieu.  As reported by ABC News' Jonathan Karl today:

"On page 432 of the Reid bill, there is a section increasing federal Medicaid subsidies for "certain states recovering from a major disaster".

The section spends two pages defining which "states" would qualify, saying, among other things, that it would be states that "during the preceding 7 fiscal years" have been declared a "major disaster area."

I am told the section applies to exactly one state:  Louisiana, the home of moderate Democrat Mary Landrieu, who has been playing hard to get on the health care bill."

This "I'll scratch your back if you'll scratch mine" mentality of our government has got to stop.  Votes on bills need to be based on the merits of the solutions, not because a member of Congress is going to gain $100,000,000 for their district or state.

I ask you to join me in contacting our Senators at
www.senate.gov to let them know we are for reform - like tort reform and competition across state lines for insurance companies - but not a reform demanding participation and blatantly ignoring the Constitution they have sworn to protect.  You can read more about this on my blog at www.MikeBrasovanBlog.com.

Respectfully,

Mike Brasovan
Candidate for US House District 12
